Design Wall Monday - 10/25/2010

I have been using this as my leader-ender project for a few months.  Instructions for this block appeared in Bonnie Hunter’s “Addicted to Scraps” column in the May/June 2010 issue of Quiltmaker.  She called it Carolina Chain and it has helped me gain a new appreciation for the importance of value.  I have had to set several blocks aside simply because the value difference wasn’t great enough.  Although I have several blocks remaining to piece, I suspect this will become a throw rather than a bed size quilt.  I’m really not looking forward to matching all those seams.  Units for the blocks are cut from 2-inch strips.

Check out other design walls at Judy Laquidara's site, Patchwork Times.

If you don't want to match seams, make it yours by adding tiny sashing. The seams will look like they match and it will be your interpretation of Bonnie's pattern. Just a suggestion.

Love your scrappy blocks and you are doing great with the contrast.

Hum, I forgot about the matching on this block. I've made 20+ for a friend's project. And, started enough to make a backing to a table runner. Obviously I haven't sewn any blocks together. My advise would be pin, pin, pin if you want the seams to match other wise I like Charlene S's suggestion.

Mmmmmm! Yummy! That will make a very fun throw for anyone's comfy sofa.

I made a quilt using the same pattern and encountered the same issues with value. It isn't a plan that has an obvious background or lighter color and all of mine ended up somewhere in the middle of the range. Still, it has lots of fun colors and used up some 2 inch strips.

Its amazing how such a simple block can be done up in so many different ways - yours is stunning!

I love it! I am making a quilt using these blocks too in a little smaller size! Aren't they fun?!

Very pretty. Isn't leaders and enders a fun approach to scrap quilting?
